Polypropylene Varieties: Decoding OPP, BOPP, and CPP Films


OPP film is a polypropylene film called co-extruded oriented polypropylene (OPP) film because the production process is multi-layer extrusion. If there is a bi-directional stretching process in the processing, it is called bi-directional oriented polypropylene film (BOPP). The other is cast polypropylene film (CPP), instead of the co-extrusion process. The properties and uses of the three films are differentiated.

OPP Film: The Basics

OPP: oriented polypropylene (film), elongated polypropylene, is a polypropylene. OPP main products:

  1. OPP Tape: Polypropylene film as a substrate, with high tensile strength, lightweight, non-toxic, tasteless, environmentally friendly, wide range of uses, and other advantages;
  2. OPP Bottles: Lightweight, low cost, improved transparency, good heat resistance, suitable for hot filling.
  3. OPP Labels: Relative to paper labels, they have the advantages of transparency, high strength, moisture resistance, and not easy to fall off. Although the cost has increased, you can get a good labeling display and use the effect. With the development of the domestic printing process and coating technology, the production of self-adhesive film labels and printing film labels are no longer problems; it can be predicted that the domestic use of OPP labels will continue to increase.

BOPP Film: Versatility and Applications

BOPP: biaxially oriented polypropylene film, also a type of polypropylene.

Commonly used BOPP films include ordinary biaxially oriented polypropylene film, heat-sealable biaxially oriented polypropylene film, cigarette packaging film, biaxially oriented polypropylene pearl film, biaxially oriented polypropylene metalized film, matte film and so on.

BOPP film also has shortcomings, such as easy accumulation of static electricity and lack of heat sealability. In the high-speed production line, BOPP film is prone to static electricity, so there is need to install static electricity remover. To obtain heat-sealable BOPP film, BOPP film surface corona treatment can be coated with heat-sealable resin adhesive, such as PVDC latex, EVA latex, etc., can also be coated with solvent adhesive, but also can be coated with extrusion or co-extruded composite method to produce heat-sealable BOPP film.

The main applications of various films are as follows:

  1. Ordinary BOPP Film: Mainly used for printing, bag making, adhesive tape, and compounding with other substrates.
  2. BOPP Heat Sealing Film: Mainly used for printing, bag making, etc.
  3. BOPP Cigarette Packaging Film: Used for high-speed cigarette packaging.
  4. BOPP Pearlescent Film: Used for food and daily necessities packaging after printing.
  5. BOPP Metallized Film Used for soap, food, cigarettes, cosmetics, pharmaceutical products, and other packaging boxes.
  6. Matte BOPP Film: Used for soap, food, cigarettes, cosmetics, pharmaceutical products, and other packaging boxes.

CPP Film: Properties and Potential

C good transparency, high gloss, good stiffness, sound moisture barrier, excellent heat resistance, easy to-heat sealing, and so on.

CPP film after printing, bag making, suitable for

  1. Clothing, knitwear, and flower bags
  2. Documents and albums film
  3. Food packagingmetalized
  4. Metallized film suitable for barrier packaging and decoration

Potential uses also include food overwrap, confectionery overwrap (twisted film), pharmaceutical packaging (infusion bags), replacing PVC in albums, folders, and documents, synthetic paper, self-adhesive tapes, business card holders, ring binders, and stand-up pouch composites.

CPP has excellent heat resistance. Since the softening point of PP is about 140°C, this type of film can be used in hot filling, steaming bags, aseptic packaging, and other fields. It is the material of choice for areas such as bread product packaging or laminates, coupled with excellent acid, alkali, and grease resistance. It is safe in contact with food, has excellent presentation properties, does not affect the flavor of the food inside, and different grades of resin can be selected to obtain the desired characteristics.
