Understanding the Different Materials of Car Paint Protection Films

2024-04-02

Paint protection film is colorless and transparent, does not affect the beauty of the car body's color, and has high hardness and good flexibility, even if using keys and other complex objects on the surface of its repeated friction will not leave any traces.

It has the function of resisting ultraviolet irradiation and preventing sheet metal from rusting.

Prevent rain and acidic corrosion, protect all parts of the car body paint surface from peeling and scratching, and prevent the paint surface from rusting and aging yellow. Now on the market to do a better reputation, car film brands have the U.S. base, dragon film, 3M, Weigu, etc., affordable, cost-effective is Tianrun PPF, the old brand is trustworthy.

So, how does the body protection film do to protect the body? What is the composition of its material?

PU

Polyurethane material, or polyurethane (Polyurethane), or PU, is an emerging organic polymer material known as the "fifth largest plastic." The first generation of paint protection film is made of PU material. It was initially used in the military to protect aircraft, ships, etc. In 2004, it was gradually used for civilian use. PU material, despite the physical properties of sound, strong toughness, softness, and good tensile strength, because of its poor weather resistance, weak ability to resist alkaline corrosion, and very easy yellowing, was quickly eliminated from the market.

PVC

Although PU has been eliminated from the market, people's attention to car paint has yet to eliminate PU, and the second generation of paint protection film, PVC, has come into being. PVC is one of the world's largest producers of plastic products; it is the full name of polyvinyl chloride, the main component of polyvinyl chloride. PVC material is more complex, has impact resistance, and is priced lower. However, because of the stretching and flexibility of the weak, we can not realize the perfect edge effect in the actual mounting process. At the same time, the service life of PVC material is short; after a period of time, there will be yellowing, staining, cracking, etc. Although PVC has a certain degree of flame retardancy, its thermal stability is poor, and high temperatures will lead to decomposition, thus releasing hydrogen chloride and other toxic gases, making the human body and the environment more harmful.

TPU

People the protection of the original car paint, but also pay attention to the safety of the environment; the third generation of paint protection film, TPU, was born; TPU is also known as thermoplastic polyurethane, the full name of ThermoplasticPolyrethanes. TPU is processed based on PU to provide better cold resistance, dirt resistance, flexibility, and self-memory function. At the same time, TPU is a mature, environmentally friendly material that does not pollute the environment. However, after having so many advantages, its price will be higher than the price of the first two generations of paint protection film.TPHTPH is a product that came out of nowhere in the past two years. The so-called TPH can be comparable to TPU, which is essentially still PVC material, just added plasticizer, so that the PVC material becomes softer and the construction is more straightforward than the PVC material. However, plasticizers also exist so that the product quickly becomes brittle, and after a long time, there will be cracking. Moreover, the adhesive layer of TPH products rapidly falls off, producing adhesive marks or leftover adhesive on the paint surface, affecting the construction effect.
