Understanding Protective Film Materials and Their Applications

2024-04-17

1. Categorized by base material:

PE base material, PVC base material, PET base material, OPP base material, etc.

2. Classified by protective film market:

(1) traditional protective film: such as galvanized steel protective film, Aluminum Profile Surface Protective Film, glass or plastic sheet protective film. Most conventional protective films are low-value-added applications with low performance and crystallinity requirements, and most are pasted protective films.

(2) Protective films for the high-tech electronics industry, e.g., dry film or wafer milling processes. This protective film must usually be produced in a clean room with stringent crystallization requirements. Only a few manufacturers have sufficient technical capabilities to meet these requirements.

(3) Flat Panel Display Protective Film: Applications include flat panel displays, TFT-LCD modules, backlight modules, glass substrates, and various optical components such as polarizers, color filters, etc. The film can be used in multiple applications, including flat panel displays, TFT-LCD modules, backlight modules, glass substrates, and various optical components such as polarizers, color filters, etc. Viscosity and crystallization point control is a high-value-added and high-tech application.

3. According to the nature: adhesive film, self-adhesive film

(1) Self-adhesive film is usually produced by CO extrusion, and its self-adhesive layer is mainly EVA, ultra-low density polyethylene or polyolefin plastic resin. This type of structure has gradually become the mainstream market because it has advantages over adhesive films, such as no residual glue, stable adhesion, reduced user costs, and higher profits for protective film manufacturers.

(2) There are solvent-based rubber adhesives, solvent-based acrylic adhesives, water-based acrylic adhesives, and silicone adhesives. Among them, water-based acrylic adhesive is the most widely used product, which can easily adjust the adhesive and has good transparency and weather resistance.

Features of acrylic adhesive protective film:

① Emulsion acrylic (water-based acrylic): the fluidity is relatively poor, and to achieve the final adhesion time is also relatively long; the viscosity of the low-grade protective film will increase the viscosity with time, the environmental protection material is good weathering, you can quickly tear the film.

② Solvent-based acrylic: It is challenging to meet the high requirements of environmental standards; other characteristics are similar to emulsion-based acrylic.

Application range of protective film

Protective film can be applied to the following areas:

Metal product surfaces, coated metal product surfaces, plastic product surfaces, automotive product surfaces, electronic product surfaces, label product surfaces, profile product surfaces, and other product surfaces.
